Where AI Is Genuinely Useful in Manufacturing Operations

Separating practical applications from marketing: demand signals, anomaly detection, documentation and where AI still does not belong.
The realistic near-term uses of AI in a small manufacturing operation are narrow and useful: summarizing unstructured supplier and quality correspondence, flagging anomalies in transaction data, drafting work instructions from existing documentation, and improving demand signals where history is long enough to be meaningful.
The unrealistic uses are the ones that assume clean, complete data. A model cannot correct a bill of materials it has never seen or infer inventory that was never transacted.
The sequencing matters: systems and data discipline first, then analytics, then automation of judgment. Reversing that order produces confident output based on inaccurate inputs.
