MRP vs. ERP: What a Midsized Manufacturer Actually Needs
6 min read
The difference between manufacturing planning capability and a full enterprise suite — and how to decide which problem you are solving.
MRP is a planning function: what to buy, what to make, and when. ERP is a broader business system that may include finance, HR, CRM and more, with manufacturing as one module among many.
Manufacturers often start an ERP search when the actual pain is a planning and inventory problem. The result is a project that costs more, takes longer and touches departments that were not asking for change.
A useful test: write down the ten questions you cannot answer today. If eight of them are about material, capacity, job status or inventory accuracy, you have a manufacturing systems problem. If most are about consolidated financials across entities, you may genuinely need enterprise scope.
Scope discipline is the single largest predictor of whether an implementation lands. Solve the manufacturing problem first; the rest can integrate.
