Getting to Inventory Accuracy Without Shutting Down
5 min read
Cycle counting, transaction discipline and the small process changes that move inventory accuracy from guesswork to reliable.
Inventory accuracy is a transaction problem, not a counting problem. An annual physical count corrects the record once a year; the record degrades again because material moves without being recorded.
The fixes are unglamorous: fewer places material can live, a receiving process that records the receipt at the dock, issue transactions tied to a work order rather than memory, and cycle counting on an ABC cadence so errors surface within weeks instead of months.
Barcode or QR scanning helps mainly because it removes the keystroke tax. If recording a move takes twenty seconds, it happens. If it takes two minutes and a login, it does not.
Set a target and measure it. Most small manufacturers can reach usable accuracy in a quarter without stopping production.
